Multitasking Slows Humans Down

This is really old news, but worth repeating. Studies [see some references below] dating many years back have repeatedly shown that human multitasking results in slower performance, lower productivity, more mistakes and less retained memory about what was done. This doesn’t mean it’s about to stop. In fact, I warrant that we’ve come (gone?) too far. If you’re even remotely technologically ‘hooked in’, think about what you do on a daily basis that can be considered multitasking. Driving while listening to the radio and/or talking on the phone (preferrably with a headset!), watching TV while surfing the Web or checking e-mail, or at work where you’re on the computer, the phone and thinking about the other 2 or 3 tasks that you need to finish ASAP.

Get Your YouTube Fix on your Mobile and “Friends” is Still Funny

Here’s a funny bit from an old Friends episode, where Joey is lamenting getting old (a.k.a. 30+). I sympathize. It sucks. Ever wonder how come life doesn’t come with a manual?

Oh yeah, if you go to http://m.youtube.com on your cell/mobile, you can pull up YouTube videos. Make sure you have a good data plan, b/c those videos ain’t small compared to text-based web pages or SMS/text messages.

Get Paid to Interview

Get paid to interview. NotchUp is a startup that matches up companies and candidates, and is really geared to folks are ‘happy’ at their current jobs, but that other companies want to get their grubby little mitts on. While you can dictate how much you want to ‘charge’ companies to speak with you, NotchUp has some algorithm that they use to come up with a price based on your experience, etc. It’s too early to sign up as they’re still in beta or alpha or something, but keep your eyes and ears open. You may not get a new job, but you could get some pocket change.

This could fly, but I suspect that the decent fees in the multiple hundreds of dollars will only apply to a small, proven successful set of individuals. If you make less than $100k, don’t expect companies to be knocking down your door and willing to pay over $1k. I wonder if I could make a living interviewing?

VR Display/Head Tracking using Wiimote

Sometimes, technology begets technology. Hand a hacker/creative/smart person some cool technology and watch them take it apart and/or create something new out of it. In this case, researcher, CMU Ph.D. student, Johnny C. Lee, has taken a Wii remote (Wiimote) and used it to create a desktop virtual reality head tracking system. Words don’t describe this as well as the video, so watch the video already. Obviously, this is the future of video games and possibly a precursor to immersing entertainment.

CES 2008 - Vegas Again!

You gotta love it - start a blog out of your bedroom, and qualify to attend the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) as a member of the press. Yup, I can actually say I did that with my buddy Doug. We’re attending CES again this year. Yes, it’s not just wandering around aimlessly trying to snag what you can for free, but even this kind of ‘work’ is a lot of fun for tech geeks like us.

We’ll be posting articles as we have time, and you can see them all on Gizmos for Geeks. Better yet, subscribe to our RSS feed so that you’ll get the articles the minute they are published. Don’t know how to do that? Hit this “How to Subscribe to an RSS Feed” mini tutorial I wrote.

TV Shows - How They’re Affected by the Writers’ Strike

No one is going to care much about this post once the strike is over or when robots are writing our TV shows, but here goes anyway. Blogger Brent Evans put together a very nice rundown of current shows and how they’ve been/are affected by the writers’ strike. Things are rather messed up. For example, Heroes got re-written so that the 11th episode of the season became the last one instead of the 22nd. Ugh.

You may be wondering how the guy that claims not to watch much TV any more is posting this. Hey, it’s news-y and current, isn’t it? Plus I do watch *some* TV, usually while eating dinner or spacing out. On the plus side, not watching that much TV means I don’t care about most of this list at all. In fact, it means I soon won’t have any reason to watch TV at all!

“Rock Band” Rocks

This weekend, I had a chance to play the latest music play-a-long video game, Rock Band, which is the natural successor to the Guitar Hero line of games. Now, don’t get me wrong, Guitar Hero is an amazing game, but Rock Band blows it away because it’s so much more fun to get a bunch of your friends together collaborating on a game. It’s also more diverse, because now you get to try to master 4 different instruments/vocals. You’ll want to keep switching up so everyone gets a chance on everything (guitar, drums, bass and vocals). You’ll soon figure out who’s good at what.

Available for Xbox 360 and Playstation (2 and 3). Make sure you get the bundle with the drums, guitar, bass and mic if you don’t already have any instruments.
