The Slap Countdown Web Page!

You’ve got to love it when television shows actually make a website in the real world that they mention in an episode. Take for example, HIMYM (How I Met Your Mother), the best sitcom on TV today, which featured the Slap Countdown web page in this season’s premier episode. Well, it’s real. You can see what Barney saw. Hehe.

If you don’t know what the hell I’m talking about, then I won’t spoil it for you. You’ll simply have to go back and watch episode #9 in Season 2 called “Slap Bet”, but if I were you, I’d just get the DVDs and watch all the episodes. They are legen …. wait for it … dary.

I May Have a Disorder!

Dog and Boy asleep
Yes, yes, so once you stop chuckling after you thought to yourself “Yeah, we already knew that,” read on. I recently discovered that there is a disorder called Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder (DSPS) where those who suffer from it have a chronic disorder with respect to the timing of their sleep patterns. Their internal clocks are set back so that they go to sleep late at night and wake up much later in the day.

After reading this, all of the major symptoms fit what I fight with every day. Even when I manage to get myself to bed early and get 8 hours of so of sleep, waking up early in the morning is still a struggle, not to mention getting through the day. But when I go to bed, I wake up normally after 9 hours and feel fine.

There are no limits to what you can do with UNIX

UNIX Fire Extinguisher

For those of you computer geeks out there, in particular UNIX aficionados, you might get a chuckle out of this. My cousin saw this photo op in Barcelona and sent me the pic. For those of you who know both of us, you’ll be able to guess exactly who sent me this. We’re both UNIX geeks; he more so than me, yet ironically, I’m just the one who decided to turn it into a half-baked career of sorts. Click the pic for a larger image. BTW, I didn’t even come up with the title to this blog post; that honor goes to the photographer.

YAPTA - Track Your Flight Prices; Get Refunds

As you are well aware, airlines change prices all the time. What you may not know is that if after you’ve bought a ticket, and the price drops, you’re actually eligible in many cases to get a refund or perhaps a voucher. Since you’re probably not willing to go (re-)checking flight prices every day or even more often, it was just a matter of time before a bunch of folks just like you thought it was time to automate that dang thing. Enter YAPTA. Weird name. Great service. Just sign up for a free account, and every time you buy a plane ticket, just enter that info and YAPTA will track it for you.

Gizmos for Geeks Has A Store!

Time for another plug for my side gig. This time, we’ve just stood up a Gizmos for Geeks version of Amazon.com’s extensive online department store. You can find it at Store.GizmosForGeeks.com.

In a nutshell, this is what’s called an affiliate site. Amazon.com was really the company that pioneered the whole affiliate marketing thing. Nowadays, you’d be hard-pressed to find any online vendor that does not have an affiliate program. Oh yeah, so what’s an affiliate? Anyone out there on the Net that gets accepted to a vendor’s affiliate program can stick up links that go to the vendor’s site. If anyone clicks on those links and then buys something, then the affiliate (like me) gets a % of that sale.

Amazon.com has an extensive set of Web Services that allow affiliate to build sites that pull back data from them in real time, so what you see on our site is what you would see if you were on Amazon performing the same browsing or searching.

You lose nothing, Amazon doesn’t lose much, as they’re quite willing to have their affiliates push even more traffic to them, and we earn income to keep our biz running. It’s a win-win-win situation. How great is that?

So next time you’re thinking Amazon, think GfG instead. Now go bookmark and get shopping. ;-)

1 Country, Not 50

It’s time for us to become 1 country instead of 50 little ones bound together by a federal government. So says Noah Weiss, and I agree. Read his manifesto, which I’ve made available for download (PDF). Read even the first few pages to get a good idea of what he’s suggesting. Even ignoring the references to Bush winning the 2000 presidential election without winning the popular vote, this is a solid read that makes a great deal of sense.

Implementing one national government, instead of the federal, state and local governments that we currently have would streamline everything, leading to much greater efficiencies. Having laws that apply to everyone regardless of their location would result in a true national identity. Federalism is antiquated and it’s time for America to grow up some more and take the next step towards democracy that guarantees an equal voice for all of its citizens.

Save Your Heart: Sleep In

I knew it! I just knew it. Researchers at several universities have done studies that show that waking up early to go to work or whatever may put you at risk for vascular disease. Not only that, a study done even earlier this year at my alma mater (UPenn) found pretty much the same thing. Who am I to argue with what my college profs say?!
